Adjust by hand and respect the safe extension

If a nut will not turn by hand, something is wrong: either the threads are dirty or damaged, or the jack is carrying more load than intended. Do not use a cheater pipe or a wrench slipped over the nut to force it. Over-torquing can strip the threads, and a jammed nut under load signals excessive loading or binding that needs to be investigated rather than forced.

Likewise, keep the spindle extension within the limits the manufacturer sets. The longer a spindle is wound out, the longer the unsupported section and the greater the risk of buckling. Look after the ground under the jack

On soil, gravel, or any surface that can settle, place mud sills or sole boards under the base plate so the leg load spreads over a larger area and the jack does not punch into soft ground. On a rated concrete slab, direct bearing is usually fine. If settlement starts to push the jacks out further over time, stop and investigate the ground conditions and add supplementary support rather than simply winding the jacks higher.

Re-check after weather and heavy use

The load on a scaffold changes as lifts are added, so re-check leveling and tightness during erection and again after the structure is complete. Pay extra attention after heavy rainfall, freeze-thaw cycles, or vibration from nearby equipment, all of which can shift a scaffold or loosen a jack. Look for gaps between the standard and the jack head, tilting standards, and uneven working surfaces as early signs that a jack has moved.

Store jacks so they stay ready

How jacks are stored between projects is often where their service life is won or lost. Keep them off the ground, store them vertically or on racks in a dry, ventilated area, and protect exposed threads from standing water. A jack left lying in puddles or stacked with muddy parts will corrode long before a jack that is cleaned and racked.
