Tube and clamp scaffolding is one of the most flexible access systems in construction. - U-head jacks: make sure the threads move smoothly, the base plate is not cracked and the nut is not stripped.
If you spot a damaged component during inspection, tag it and take it out of service immediately. Do not wait until the next project to deal with it.
Clean parts after every project
Construction debris accelerates wear and corrosion. After each job, remove concrete, mortar, mud and paint from the tubes and couplers, wash steel parts with clean water, then dry them thoroughly before storage. Pay special attention to coupler threads—dried mortar in the threads is one of the fastest ways to ruin a coupler. Never store wet parts, because trapped moisture is exactly what rust needs to get started.
Prevent rust and corrosion
Corrosion is the biggest threat to steel scaffolding. Galvanized tubes resist rust far better than bare steel, and hot-dip galvanized finishes last longest in outdoor use. When the galvanizing gets scratched or chipped during handling, touch the damaged spots up with a zinc-rich paint so rust cannot take hold underneath. In common practice, coupler bolts should be tightened to a torque of roughly 40–65 N·m, and they should be re-checked as the scaffold settles. Loose bolts let tubes slip; over-tightening can strip the threads or crack the forged body. Replace worn nuts and bolts rather than reusing them, and never substitute ordinary bolts for the correct coupler hardware.
Store parts properly
Good storage is half the battle. Keep tubes and couplers in a dry, ventilated warehouse, off the ground and away from standing water, chemicals and salt exposure. Store tubes vertically or on racks so they do not bend under their own weight, and keep couplers in containers so they do not get lost or corroded. If parts must stay outdoors, cover them with a rainproof tarpaulin and check them more often.
Replace damaged parts immediately
Never repair load-bearing scaffold parts with unauthorized welding or bending. Replace any component that shows deep corrosion, structural cracks, missing locking devices or excessive deformation. Using a damaged coupler to save a few dollars can compromise the entire scaffold and put workers at risk. When you need replacements, choose parts that match the original system so the whole set keeps working as one.
Follow load capacity guidelines
Overloading is one of the most common causes of scaffold damage. Follow the manufacturer’s load ratings, distribute materials evenly across the platform, avoid impact loading and do not pile materials higher than the design allows.
