An adjustable U head jack is one of the most worked components on a scaffold. It takes the weight of ledgers, beams and formwork, and it gets knocked, dragged and left out in the weather between jobs. Because it is so small and so easy to overlook, damage on a jack is often found late, when a crew is already standing on the platform above it. Knowing how to inspect an adjustable u head jack for wear and damage before it goes back into service is a simple habit that keeps a site safe and saves money on early replacement.
What an adjustable U head jack actually does
A U head jack sits on top of a standard or a prop and supports the horizontal members that carry the working platform. The U-shaped plate cradles a ledger or beam, while a threaded shaft lets the crew raise or lower the head to level the scaffold on uneven ground or to set the exact height of a formwork deck. Most jacks are made from Q235 or Q355 steel and finished with hot-dip or electro galvanizing to resist rust, which is why a jack that has lost its coating is already telling you something.
When should you inspect a U head jack?
A jack should be checked at three points in its life. First, during the daily or pre-shift walk-around of the erected scaffold, give the jacks you can reach a quick visual once-over. Second, every time a scaffold is dismantled, inspect each jack properly before it is stacked for transport. Third, do a full inspection of the whole batch before a new project starts, because jacks that have sat in storage for months can corrode or get bent without anyone noticing. If a jack has been dropped, hit by a vehicle or overloaded, take it out of service and inspect it immediately, no matter when the last check was done.
Step-by-step inspection of an adjustable U head jack
1. Check the U plate
Start at the top. Look at the U-shaped plate for cracks, especially at the corners and around the weld that joins it to the shaft. A hairline crack here is a serious fault, because the plate carries the full load of the beam above it. Also check whether the plate has been spread open or deformed, which happens when a beam has been dropped into it from height. If the two sides of the U are no longer parallel, the jack cannot hold the ledger securely and should be retired.
2. Inspect the threaded shaft
The threads do the real work, so they deserve the most attention. Run your eye along the full length of the thread and check for bent sections, flattened or stripped threads, and any sign that the shaft has been hammered. A bent shaft will bind when you try to turn it and will load unevenly under weight. Stripped threads mean the jack can slip under load, which is exactly the failure you do not want at head height. If you can see a bend or stripped threads at any point, the jack is done.
3. Look at the welds
An adjustable U head jack is usually a welded assembly, so the joints between the plate, the shaft and any collar are the places where fatigue shows first. Check each weld for fine cracks, flaking paint around the weld line, or a weld that has opened up. Flaking paint around a weld is often the first clue that the metal underneath is moving under stress. Any cracked or suspect weld means the jack must not be used.
4. Check the galvanized coating and rust
The galvanized layer is the jack’s first line of defence against corrosion. Look for areas where the coating has been scraped off, worn through or rusted. Surface rust on the plate is not automatically a reason to scrap the jack, but rust on the threads is a different matter, because it eats into the working surface and makes the jack stiff and hard to adjust. Heavy pitting on the shaft, or rust that has flaked away large areas of the coating, is a sign the jack has been neglected and should be replaced.
5. Test the adjustment
Finally, test the jack by hand. The shaft should turn smoothly through its full range without sticking, grinding or needing a hammer. If it is stiff, clean and lightly lubricate the threads and try again; if it still binds, the shaft is likely bent or the threads are damaged. Also check that the jack holds its setting, because a jack that slowly winds down under light hand pressure will not hold under load either.
Signs that a U head jack needs to be taken out of service
If you find any of the following, tag the jack and remove it from the set rather than trying to patch it up:
- Cracks in the U plate, the shaft or any weld
- A bent or visibly deformed shaft or plate
- Stripped, flattened or badly worn threads
- Heavy rust or pitting, especially on the threads
- A jack that binds, slips or will not hold its adjustment
A damaged jack is cheap to replace and expensive to keep. Trying to straighten a bent shaft or weld over a crack on site is a false economy, because the repaired part will never carry the same load again and no one will remember which jack was patched and which was not.
Keeping your jacks in good condition
Most U head jack damage happens off the scaffold, during handling and storage. When a scaffold comes down, clean the jacks, dry them, and lightly oil the threads before stacking. Store them off the ground on pallets or racks, under cover where possible, so they do not sit in mud or standing water. Do not throw jacks into a skip or let them rattle loose in the back of a truck, because each impact dents the plate and knocks the coating off the threads. A little care at the end of a job means a full set of serviceable jacks at the start of the next one.

A jack that is built properly in the first place, from Q235 or Q355 steel with a consistent galvanized finish and clean welds, will pass inspection for years, while a cheap jack can fail the first time it is checked.
