When a formwork fleet moves between projects, the useful question is not simply whether a prop looks reusable. It is whether its identity, interfaces, condition record, and planned application remain clear enough for the project team to make an engineered decision.

Why mixed prop fleets create avoidable risk

Adjustable props are temporary vertical supports used with formwork and shoring arrangements. Their adjustment does not make them interchangeable across every layout, head condition, base condition, or project requirement. A rental yard can accumulate similar-looking items from different purchase batches, repairs, or customer returns. Without a clear separation process, a crew may receive components whose intended configuration cannot be confirmed from the dispatch record.

Treat the fleet as controlled equipment rather than generic steel stock. The engineer or competent person responsible for the temporary works determines the support arrangement; the fleet manager supplies accurate, traceable information for that decision.

Build a practical identity record before equipment returns to stock

Create a return record that follows each batch from site to quarantine, inspection, storage, and the next dispatch. The record does not need to predict capacity or approve a design. It should make differences visible before a prop is offered for reuse.

  • Keep the original purchase or batch reference with the returned group.
  • Record the prop type and the head and base arrangement actually returned with it.
  • Note whether pins, nuts, sleeves, plates, or other functional parts are present and identifiable.
  • Separate items that need inspection, repair, or further technical review from dispatch-ready stock.
  • Photograph unusual damage or non-matching parts so the next reviewer is not relying on memory.

Turn a customer enquiry into a controlled dispatch brief

A useful quotation or dispatch brief asks for the information that distinguishes one temporary support arrangement from another. Ask the customer to provide the approved design basis, required support interfaces, planned working range, project location, delivery sequence, and any inspection or documentation expectations. Do not fill gaps with assumed dimensions, loads, or compatibility.

A concise internal rule: no technical promise should appear on a sales order unless it can be traced to the approved project requirement and the identified product record.

Make the handover easy to verify

Before loading, compare the pick list with the labelled storage group and the customer brief. At delivery, give the receiving team a list that lets them count and segregate what arrived before equipment enters the work area.

This does not replace site inspection, temporary-works design, installation control, or the project’s safety procedures. It gives those controls a more reliable starting point by reducing ambiguity in the supplied equipment.
