If the head is poorly cast or the wedge fits loosely, the whole bay loses rigidity and the scaffold becomes unsafe under load. In short, the brace head is a small part with a big responsibility.

The main components of a ringlock brace head

A standard ringlock brace head is made up of four parts, plus the rosette it locks onto.

1. Cast steel body

The body is the head itself, usually cast from steel such as Q235. It has a slot that slides over the rosette on the standard. The body is shaped so that when the wedge is driven in, it grips the rosette on both faces. Brace heads are made in left and right versions, mirror images of each other, so they can be fitted to both ends of a diagonal brace tube.

2. Wedge pin

The wedge pin is the tapered steel wedge that locks the head to the rosette. It sits in the slot of the body. When you hammer it down, the taper forces the body tight against the rosette, creating a firm mechanical lock. This is what makes the connection rigid, and it is also what makes the system quick to assemble and dismantle.

3. Rivet or bolt and nut

The wedge is held to the body by a rivet, or in some designs a bolt and nut. This keeps the wedge attached to the head when the brace is handled, transported, or stored, so it is never lost on site. It also stops the wedge from being driven out accidentally during use.

4. Tube connection end

The rear of the brace head is the part that connects to the diagonal brace tube. The two heads, one left and one right, are fitted to the two ends of the tube, either welded or swaged in place. The finished assembly is the ringlock diagonal brace, and its length is set by the bay size and the vertical spacing of the rosettes.

5. The rosette on the standard

Strictly speaking, the rosette is part of the ringlock standard, not the brace head. But it is the mating surface the head locks onto, so it belongs in the picture. A ringlock rosette is a round steel plate with eight holes, welded to the standard at regular intervals, typically every 500 mm. Because it has eight openings, up to four ledgers and four braces can connect at the same node, which is why the ringlock system is so flexible.

How the brace head locks onto the rosette

Assembly takes seconds. First, the head is slid over the rosette so the rosette sits inside the slot of the body. Then the wedge is driven down with a hammer. As the taper moves, it pulls the body tight against the rosette and locks the brace in place. To dismantle, you simply knock the wedge back up and lift the brace off. No bolts, no loose parts, no tools beyond a hammer.

Materials and quality to look for

The body is normally cast steel, and the wedge is made from hardened steel so it can take repeated hammering without deforming. Surface treatment matters too. Hot-dip galvanized heads resist corrosion and last longer on exposed sites, while self-color heads are common for indoor or short-term work. When you inspect a brace head, check that the casting is smooth with no cracks or porosity, that the wedge slides freely but fits snugly, and that the rivet is tight.
