Most pre-use checks on construction sites focus on tubes and frames, but the small parts that hold a scaffold together are often the first to fail. Accessories connect the working platform to the structure and to the ground. These parts are handled, dropped and stacked between jobs, so their condition at the start of a shift is never the same as when they left the factory. A quick, structured look before use catches damage while it is still cheap to fix.

The checks are not just good practice. In most jurisdictions the person in control of the work has a duty to make sure scaffold parts are in a safe working order before anyone relies on them. Who should carry out the checks

Accessories should be checked by someone who can recognise a defect when they see one. There is no fixed certificate for a daily pre-use check, but the person doing it needs enough experience to tell a cosmetic scratch from a structural crack. A person who cannot identify a problem has not really inspected anything. Formal inspections at the required intervals should be left to a competent person or a qualified inspector who works to the design and to the relevant standard, and who records the findings in writing.

1. Couplers and clamps

Couplers are the most load-critical accessory in a tube and clamp scaffolding system. Look for cracks in the drop-forged body and at the weld lines, missing or cross-threaded bolts, worn threads and nuts that cannot be tightened home. A coupler should grip without needing to be forced, and it should not move by hand once tightened. Swivel couplers also need a check on the joint that lets them rotate, because a seized or sloppy swivel changes how the brace sits. Mixing in non-standard or substituted fittings weakens the load path, so every coupler on the job should match the design and the tube diameter.

2. Base jacks and u-head jacks

Base jacks sit between the frame and the ground, and u-head jacks support the ledgers and beams above. Check the threaded shaft for bends, burrs and stripped threads, and make sure the nut spins freely along its full travel. The base plate must be flat and free of serious dents, and the box or tube body should not be distorted. Never extend a jack beyond the safe limit marked by the manufacturer, and make sure the part is the solid or hollow type intended for the load. A jack that looks fine but is over-extended defeats the point of the check.

3. Wedge pins, spigots and rosette components

In system scaffolds such as ringlock, the rosette connection is only as reliable as the wedge pin that locks it. Check that pins are not bent, worn thin or missing their head, and that they tap home with a firm hold and seat evenly. Inspect spigots and end fittings for cracks and for elongation of the holes where pins pass through. If a wedge rattles, the joint is not doing its job, and a repaired scaffold made from mismatched pins is a risk that is hard to spot from the ground.

4. Planks and working platforms

Walk each platform and look at the boards from both ends. Modern aluminum plywood planks should be checked for cracked or bowed surfaces, for framework that has separated from the facing, and for edges that have broken away. Boards must lie flat with no gap a foot could slip through, and they must be secured so they cannot be kicked out of position. A plank that is warped, split or loose is a fall waiting to happen, so flag it rather than stepping around it.

5. Ladders and access parts

Access ladders need rungs that are sound, clear of mud and firmly fixed, with side rails free of cracks. A scaffolding ladder should reach well past the landing point and be secured at the top and bottom so it cannot slide when someone climbs. Hatches and trapdoor platforms should open and close properly and stay shut during work.

6. Casters and wheels

On mobile and tower scaffolds, casters carry the whole structure. Check every wheel for a firm tyre, a straight axle and a brake that holds the scaffold still when engaged. Loose or locked-in-place wheels are a common find on inspected rigs, and either condition is unsafe in different ways.

Spotting corrosion before it hides damage

Corrosion is the quietest way an accessory loses strength. Rust digs into tube walls, eats at welds and hides beneath flaking paint. A thorough visual check under good light catches most of it, especially surface pitting, loss of wall thickness and corrosion around the points where parts are welded. Surface rust should be cleaned off so the part underneath can be judged properly. Remember that simply blasting and repainting a corroded part does not repair it, it can even hide the damage, so treat repainted components with extra suspicion. When to inspect

Stick to a simple rhythm. Keep records and tag the result

A check you cannot prove did not happen. Write down the date, the name of the person inspecting and what was found, and keep the record available on site while the scaffold is in use. If a part fails the check, take it out of service, tell the supervisor in writing and follow up until it is fixed. Written records also build a picture over time, so recurring faults on one type of accessory show up early instead of causing a repeat incident.
